PhD


She has 15 years of nursing experience. She obtained a registered nurse degree from the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College in 2007 and a BSN from KNUST in 2015, with a specialization in emergency nursing. She then obtained an MSC in Advanced Nursing Practice from the University of Cape Coast in 2019. Since 2012, she has worked most of the time (when not taking time off for further training) as a staff nurse or senior staff nurse in the Emergency Medicine Directorate at KATH. She also worked as an Assistant Lecturer in Nursing at KNUST since January 2021. She was selected as a Fogarty Scholar in December 2022.  
Research Topic: Violence among women and children reporting to the Emergency Department: Development and validation of a screening tool.
Degree Title: PhD in Nursing at KNUST (In progress)


He graduated from KNUST with a BA in Sociology and Social Work (2013) and an MSc in Health Services Planning and Management (2018). He currently works as a research officer in the KNUST School of Public Health. Since 2013, he has worked on a wide variety of research projects, including several related to injury. Mr. Amissah was selected as a Fogarty scholar in April 2022. 
Research Topic: Assess the emergency preparedness of the health system in road traffic trauma care in Ghana.

Estella has over 14 years of nursing experience. She obtained a degree as a registered nurse from the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College and a BSN from KNUST, both in 2007, with a specialization in emergency nursing. She then obtained an MPhil in Nursing from the KNUST in 2020. Since 2007, she has worked most of the time (when not taking time off for further training) as a senior nursing officer or principal nursing officer in the Emergency Room as the Nurse-in-Charge at KNUST Hospital. She was selected as a Fogarty Scholar in December 2022. 
Research Topic: Improving trauma care and safety among petty traders (hawkers) in the Ashanti region due to the rise in traffic accidents and injuries.
Degree Title: PhD in Nursing at KNUST (In progress)


With a Bachelor’s in Nursing and Psychology and an MSc in Health Services Planning and Management, she has served for many years in the role of Dep. Dir of Nursing Services, KATH before she was selected as a Fogarty scholar.
Research Topic: Training for Emergency Nursing at District Hospitals in Ghana
Degree Title: PhD in Emergency Nursing and Health Promotion


Graduated from KNUST in 2005 with a BSc in Computer Engineering, majoring in Medical Technology. She then worked at several hospitals in Ghana as a biomedical engineer and equipment consultant. She pursued further education from 2017-2020, obtaining an MBA from Hochschule Anhalt, Bernburg, Germany, in collaboration with Ghana Telecoms University College. Since graduation, she has continued her work as a biomedical engineering consultant for several hospitals in Ghana, including the 500-bed Maternity and Children’s Block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KNUST's main teaching hospital). She was selected for a Fogarty scholarship in February 2022. She will also work closely with the National Ambulance Service (NAS), which is aided by the fact that the NAS's Executive Director is on our program’s TAG. 
Research Topic: Assessing the Responsiveness of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Availability of Radiology Equipment in Healthcare Facilities for Injury Management in Ghana
Degree Title: PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana

About Us

Kumasi Injury is a research collaboration between Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Ghana and University of Washington (UW), Seattle USA. Its agenda is to strengthen injury control research in Ghana and West Africa. The program is solidly grounded on a history of collaboration in injury research, which started in 1995 and has received funding through Fogarty International Center (FIC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA since 2006.
